Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ride a manual motorcycle if I take my CBT on an automatic scooter?

Legally yes, the CBT isn't restricted to the specific bike type you train on. However we'd always recommend professional training before riding a completely new type of bike on the road.

What should I do if I haven't ridden a motorcycle at all before?

You will be taught thoroughly throughout your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). However it is a good idea to get as much preparation in beforehand as you can. It's worth making sure you have a good idea of what you’ll have to do during your CBT, then get some practice in by trying out some of the exercises on a bicycle. It’s also worth having a brush up on your highway code too.

Do I need to take a theory test before my CBT?

In short, no. The CBT passes you as a learner for 2 years, you don’t need to pass a theory test. However you will have to pass one if you wish to progress to a full motorcycle licence.

What can I ride once I complete the CBT?

This will depend on your age. If you are 16 you will be restricted to a 50cc moped. If you are aged 17 or older you can ride a light motorcycle up to 125cc.

How long is the CBT valid for?

The CBT certificate is valid for 2 years. If you don't move on to a full licence you will have to complete a CBT every 2 years.

What can I ride if I have a full car licence?

If you passed your UK driving test before 1st February 2001, you can ride a 50cc moped without L plates, without the need to take a CBT. You can also take a pillion passenger. However if you want to ride a 125cc you will have to take the CBT.

If you passed your driving test after the 1st February 2001 a CBT will be required before you can ride any scooter or motorbike.

I want to ride a large motorcycle without restrictions, what do I need to do?

Ultimately you will need a full (A) motorcycle licence.

Can I carry passengers after completing a CBT?

No. In order to carry a pillion passenger you need to get either an AM, A1, A2 or A licence by taking a theory and both modules of the practical motorcycle test.

Can I ride on motorways after taking my CBT?

No. You can only do this once you’ve attained your full licence.

Do I need to display L plates after passing the CBT?

Yes. Unless you have a full car licence issued before 1st February 2001 and your riding a 50cc moped.

Can you ride on a dual carriageway with a CBT licence?

Yes you can.

Can you fail the CBT?

It’s not technically a test, however an instructor will ask you to come back for additional training if they feel you require it.

London CBT Training

Getting CBT training in London has never been easier. RideTo allows you to book a CBT course near you that fits your schedule and motorcycle type. London can be a great city to ride in, with slow-moving traffic allowing you to filter through congestion, and designated parking bays across the city so you can easily get to where you need to go.

We offer motorcycle lessons across more than 30 locations across London, including Introduction to Motorcycling, Gear Conversion Course, CBT Course and Full Motorcycle Licence courses.

If you’re unsure which training you need, don't hesitate to contact a member of our motorcycle training team.

So if you want to learn to ride a motorcycle, you've come to the right place, read on for the steps you need to take to get your CBT and Full Motorcycle Licence.

What's Involved in London CBT Training?

CBT training is often referred to as a CBT test. However, there is technically no ‘test’ involved. CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training and takes between 6-8 hours on one day, ensuring you can ride safely on your own.

To take a CBT test in London, you’ll need a valid UK provisional licence or UK full driving licence.

Whether you aim to ride a moped or motorcycle you will need to take a CBT course to get a bike licence.

The day itself will consist of 5 parts, 4 of these will be off-road. The final part of the day will be road riding where your instructor will monitor you riding safely.

The five parts of CBT Training consist of the following parts, in sequence:

  • A: Introduction and eyesight check
  • B: Practical on-site training
  • C: Practical on-site riding
  • D: Practical on-road training
  • E: Practical on-road riding

You move onto the next section when your trainer is happy you’ve learnt the theory and shown the practical skills to a safe level.

If your instructor believes that you are not at a satisfactory standard for any of the 5 elements then you won’t be able to continue your training, and you’ll need to book further training on another day.

How Much Does CBT Training Cost?

Motorcycle CBT training costs vary between London locations due to differing training ground rental and equipment costs. The range typically falls between £170 to £195 around London. At RideTo, you’ll be able to compare all training locations and costs by typing in your postcode, guaranteeing the best price.

What Motorbike, Scooter or Moped Can I Ride In London with a CBT?

After completing your CBT training, if you're over 17 years old, you'll gain the ability to ride a moped, scooter, or motorbike with an engine size of 125cc or less. However, if you're 16 years old, you'll be restricted to riding a 50cc moped.

How Do I Get a Full Motorcycle Licence?

If you're aiming for a full motorbike license, you'll need to follow three key steps. First, you'll obtain your CBT license. Second, you'll take your theory test. Finally, you'll undergo full motorcycle training.

The motorcycle theory test costs £23, that can be book on gov.uk. This test consists of a multiple-choice theory and a hazard perception test.

The last hurdle before obtaining your A, A1, or A2 license is completing your full motorcycle training. This typically lasts between 4 to 7 days, depending on your prior motorcycle riding experience.

If you're eager to kickstart your journey toward a full license, take our quiz to determine your starting point.

Book Motorcycle Lessons in London

In London, motorcycle lessons can be as affordable as £23 per hour. However, unlike obtaining a car driving license, you don't need extensive motorcycle lessons to experience the thrill of riding on two wheels.

You can opt for an introductory session known as an Introduction to Motorcycling course to gain some experience riding a motorcycle, before booking any CBT training. This will give you a 2-3 hour taster session, allowing you to learn how a motorcycle works; the controls, maintenance and safety checks you should conduct before riding including how to move and park your bike.

UK’s #1 platform for motorcycle training

RideTo operates in more than 40 cities across the UK and has helped new riders book over 1,000,000 hours of motorcycle training.
